Thus the author argues that it has to be recognized that religion has undergone a significant transformation in America over the years. It has had its effect in shaping the American culture but by and large, it has itself been altered by the culture as well. Wolfe actually gives a tone of being satisfied with this fundamental shift in religion in the United States as he goes on to illustrate the advantages that this brings to the forefront.

It removes the fundamentalist element from a society and moves it to being more tolerant of religious differences and doctrines and indeed more open in this regard. He also thinks this trend to be good in that it ensures religion does not negatively influence public policy. He states that “there is then reason to fear that the faithful are a threat to liberal democratic values” (Wolfe, 264). People engage in seeking salvation through their own personal choice rather than being pushed to do so.
