I feel that a truly educated person is also a cultured person, by cultured I mean that he or she may not be a great artist but has the sensitivity and the ability to appreciate great art. He may not be able to write well but can appreciate Tolstoy’s ‘War and Peace’ as the great classic that it is.
I think that true education helps us to think for ourselves and to decide what is right and what is wrong. It gives us courage to follow what we believe in and to fight for what is right. True education teaches tolerance, love and peace.
I guess in the end it comes down to priorities. I will judge how successful I am according to what I deem important. A rich person for whom money is important will be superficially happy and satisfied with just money. For me my family and friends are important and if I lose them nothing else will hold any meaning. And that is what education teaches us and I am trying to take away from it: to set our priorities straight. That is the difference between a truly educated person and one who has just been trained like a robot to carry out a series of specific tasks and functions. I will feel that I have been truly educated when I am inspired by what is beautiful and ugly around me. When I believe that I have the courage and knowledge to choose right over wrong.
