One of the most obvious impact that the Harlem Renaissance had on Duke Ellington’s career was that his initially his career developed because economic and social factors had created a setup where black artists were being appreciated in their own right’s and were being given opportunities to perform and display their art.

Ellington’s career really took off when his band moved to the Harlem area where he was the key performer in clubs like the ‘Cotton Club’ and Apollo’s theatre. Also the Renaissance allowed him the opportunity to explore many different kinds of music and to fuse these with his own thereby further developing him as an artist. In addition he also contributed with his innovative work and his role in developing and inspiring many artist who worked with him and some whom he trained. Also there is the focus that he had on his black identity an important element for black artist’s of this time period. In his autobiography he explains how his racial identity is critical to the work that he produced during his life.

The main point that this essay is making that the Harlem Renaissance even though it ended relatively quickly was critical to the development of black musicians and Duke Ellington was one of the most talented and renowned musician’s who developed during this renaissance. This renaissance gave him the opportunity to develop his career which it might not have under different circumstances.
