There is much of the untapped market for the iPad (which could be perceived as the ‘problem child’) and thus this product could well be cross subsidized with the above two. Likewise, in order to have a global leadership position and eventually a monopoly, the developing world could be targeted with a ‘price penetration’ strategy to market the products while applying a downward stretch. A new competitive product, Galaxy Tab (by Samsung) is yet to be introduced in many markets but in spite of its promising and comparatively more features, existing Apple loyal customers would not switch,, eventually it isn’t much of a threat.
Apple, on the other hand has proved to be a proactive leader based on the rapid evolutionary change it has witnessed thanks to the great marketer, Steve Jobs. Generally, even those consumers who have never been acquainted with Apple’s annual report boast about his taste in design and choice of product colours and generally some might not call the product by the name, ‘MP3 player’ but rather the cliché now, ‘iPod’.
Given the stance of the company, entry of new players cannot in any way be treated as a threat to the company rather rivalry among existing competitors, such as Microsoft, continuously needs to be tackled with. Bargaining power of suppliers (as in China) could become strong if they are allowed to be the core suppliers and hence this are needs to be expanded.
