Portuguese sailors who would go to Africa to secure slaves and sell them in the US introduced slavery in the US in 1600s.
It is of paramount importance to note that the first slaves were prisoners of war or people who were unable to service their debts. After the development of agriculture some 10,000 years ago, people realized that they needed cheap labor, which they could get from slaves. Most of the slaves that used to serve in the US were Africans and Indians.
