This paper discusses what schizophrenia is and how is it related to drug abuse. It sheds light on how drug abuse leads to schizophrenia. The paper also aims to clarify misconceptions that are generally found in relation with schizophrenia and drug abuse.
Although there are various reasons and factors that lead a person to become schizophrenic. Psychologists generalize the reasons into two major categories. According to psychologists, a person may suffer from schizophrenia due to either genetic or environmental factors. Patients, in general, either inherit the disorders from a first, second, or third degree genetic source, or s/he may be attacked by the disease due to external influences from his surroundings. However, recent research has proven one more major reason behind increasing rate of schizophrenic patients (National Institute of Mental Health, 2006). Several cases have been reported around the world where schizophrenic patients have been discovered as illicit drug addicts. Some psychologists classify drug addiction as an environmental factor leading to schizophrenia (Everyday Health, 2009).
