Sample Essay

When Muhammad came claiming divine revelation, he was rebuffed by a mahority of the powerful Meccan elite, however there were many young men and women, slaves, the poor and impoverished of the society who accepted his message of hope and faith and devotion to one God.

When Muhammad was forced to leave Mecca he quickly managed to find supporters in the city of Madina and from then on too many neighboring areas. The purpose of pointing out these factors is to understand that the Arab society needed spiritual and social guidance. The question that arises then is whether the Quran along with Sura was able to meet this need. The reality is that the Quran is an extremely comprehensive book dealing with many spiritual and social issues. Sura 17 is an excellent example of this. The Sura repeatedly exhorts its reader to believe in one God and reminds them of the penalty of disobedience. It says

‘If any do wish for the transitory things (of this life), We readily grant them – such things as We will, to such person as We will: in the end have We provided Hell for them: they will burn therein, disgraced and rejected.’ (Al Isrâ’ Surah 17)

This is an example of the kind of spiritual guidance that the Muslims derive from the Quran. This verse may appear harsh but there are many others in this Sura and others which speak of Gods love and forgiveness.
