After Rivera returned to United in 1940 June 5, he was hired to make a 10 mural painting named Pan America Unity for Golden gate International Exposition, invited by Pflueger.

This mural was made in order to celebrate the opening of Golden Gate and Oakland Bay bridges finished in 1937 and 1936 respectively. Pflueger’s main aim was to have visitors witness art in action. He included images or portraits of Dudley C. Carter, a woodcarver, Frida Kahlo, his wife and himself as they planted a tree holding the actress Paulette Goddard’s hand. This mural was well paying with $1,000 awarded per month plus $1,000 for travel expenses as he worked on the mural (Foard & Rivera, 2003).
