Sample Essay

Nanticoke have lost their original language in many ways they are still maintaining their traditions very passionately and closely. One important reason is the presence of individuals like Jean Norwood who are still involved in discovering the history of their people and preserving it for future generations. Members still are proud of their ancestry and regularly meet to celebrate their identity. Another reason is tribal laws which prevent profit making from vice and which I feel will strengthen the community’s traditions and the community itself.

One of the factors which surprised me the most was the importance given to the maternal side of the family in the Navajo tribe specifically.

Although there are significant differences between Nanticoke and the Seminole and Cheyenne tribe, there are also some very important differences between the Nanticoke and the Navajo tribes. The difference in the way each tribe lived their daily lives, with the Nanticoke less nomadic in nature can be traced in the spirituality of the tribes. The restlessness of the Navajo tribe is also apparent in their spiritual description of life. People(insect people) are destined to move from one world to another simply because they cannot stop fighting. Basically there is no resting place for them, only continuous movement. The Nanticoke tribe on the other hand seeks to pacify the Holy Spirits for happiness and bliss in the next world.
