While life was mundane and normal for most, they did not seek to venture out of their comfort zones and seek for a better life for themselves. However, Douglass’ discontentment and curiosity gave him the desire to read and write. In Thomas Auld’s house, his wife set out to teach young Douglass how to read and write.
When the master of the house discovered what was going on, he admonished his wife greatly saying ‘…knowledge makes a man unfit to be a slave’ (47). These words opened Douglass’ eyes and rather than temper down his desire to read and write, it increased this yearning.
