P.Dumont providing a background to the journal that he is analyzing explains that even though we know very little about the bigger more important events in Said Bey’s life the journals provided by his family gave detailed day-day to accounts of events in his life. These accounts gave us an insight into the job description of a bureaucrat , the entertainment activities that were available in Istanbul, the kind of food’s consumed and even the prices of every-day household items consumed by the writer of the journal.
An element that makes Said Bey’s journal so important is the obsession and meticulousness with which he has recorded the details of his daily activities. An obsession with detail coupled with plenty of leisure time is probably responsible for this recording. This detail however allows the historian to get a detailed overview on Said Bey’S life. For example the historical analyst is able to get an idea of the time that Said Bey devoted to his job, however there is less coverage about what the exact contents of hid job were. For example we may know that he spent 10 hours in a week with the Superior Health Council but we do not know what activities he was engaged in those hours. Generally separate research into the Superior Health Council indicates that this was not very mentally or physically taxing work and in fact most of it probably consisted of unproductive meetings. Other then this his work seems filled with entertaining friends or consuming light refreshments.
