According to positive psychology, there are five important characteristics that must be present in order to live a happy and fulfilled life. We require all of them, and the more of each we have, the happier we will be. We are less content the less we have, and if any aspect is absent entirely, we will most likely be dissatisfied.

  1. Positive feelings of all kinds. Not simply delight, but also anticipation. Pride. Satisfaction. Any and all pleasant emotions are helpful.
  2. Engagment: We need to be involved in what we’re doing and what’s going on around us. We often go through life on autopilot, and the more really involved we are, the more pleased and content we will be.
  3. (Successful) relationships, and not simply romantic ones. Relationships of all types, including those with our parents, children, friends, and coworkers, all contribute to our happiness levels.
  4. Meaning. We are unlikely to be really happy if we do not believe our lives have significance. The more significant our existence appears to be, the happier we are and the more pleasant the rest of our lives appear to be.
  5. Accomplishments. We need to feel like we are achieving something, just like we need to feel like we are accomplishing something with significance. We require a set of objectives to strive toward.

Furthermore, one of the most basic elements of happiness is the necessity of an individual to hold a healthy body. It is important to realize that health and happiness play a cyclic role where one supports the other. By avoiding indulging oneself self in activities such as drug intake and other such activities that can harm health, an individual can maintain an adequate degree of health in order to seek out happiness.

Another imperative factor that comes into play in the assurance of the presence of happiness is the factor of guilt. A person should avoid engaging in activities that can result in the development of guilt inside the person (Zamani, 2009). This is because of the fact that guilt leads to unrest, which in turn leads to the continued prevalence of discontent. Activities such as breaking the law or performing immoral actions can serve as a temporary thrill but only serve to contribute to the development of guilt with the passage of time.
