As I mentioned earlier, the manifestations of this disease have been linked to the imbalance of chemicals in the brain. Drugs called anti-psychotics are given to help restore the balance of chemicals in the brain. The names of some commonly used medicines are haloperidol and droperidol. Medicines are not without their side-effects. These drugs promote weight gain, “akathasia” (which is an extreme form of restlessness). Some patients develop severe, painful muscle contractions. (Frankenburg 2007)
However, drugs are not the only form of treatment available. Psychotherapies, in the form of cognitive behavioral therapy are also effective in management of this disease. (Gerstein 2007)
Also, the repercussions of this disease are not limited to the individual alone. The disease puts considerable stress on family members. Family counseling is an important aspect os the management of schizophrenia. The family needs to be counseled about the patient’s disease, and also that they should not be too critical of the patient, because excessive family criticism has been associated with higher relapse rates.
