The conflict Amy is talking about in her essay is the difference the English language. This difference is seen in her mother’s “broken” English and her “perfect” English. The other conflict Amy discusses is the acceptance or perception on others and herself on this “limited English” (Tan, 1990 p.28).

The differences between her mother’s English and hers have caused them to have a close relationship. Amy is able to understand her mother’s “broken” English since it is her mother tongue. Since Amy has “perfect” English, her mother has often used her to talk on her behalf when she was not taken seriously. The differences caused by their languages did not pull them apart but brought them together. This is seen in the manner in which Amy often received and made calls in the name of “Mrs. Tan.” Amy’s realizations of the perception people have on their English made her empathize with her mother.
